Peter Mielniczek works mainly in video and installation. He is currently exploring subjects of the everyday and commonplace using videos of between 2 minutes and 10 minutes duration. The films show unremarkable situations but lift them into exciting and engaging vignettes. In one film a simple walk along an urban footpath becomes a tense and humorous representation of an innocent stroll. As if the flaneur has stepped out of a Gustave Caillebotte painting and into our 21st Century streets. He explores his subjects in real time deliberately eschewing technical effects; relying instead on the positioning and movement of the camera itself. This method is vulnerable to a high failure rate; but this gives the successful pieces that are exhibited a rare and immediate quality.
